Standing in front of a BOGO shelf, our founder worked out what the sign actually said: this isn’t a discount, it’s a household discount. Buy-one-get-one assumes a second person. A 12-pack assumes somewhere to put it.

The fix should be obvious — find another solo shopper. What stops people is everything that comes with a stranger: whether it’s safe, and whether you’re actually getting your money back when you’re the one who paid.

So we built for both. Everyone in a Halfsies community verifies with a student .edu or work email, and every handoff happens at a vetted spot. And their half is held before you spend a cent — they pay you at the meetup, or we charge them and pay you. The trust problem is the whole problem. It’s answered before you open the app.

Not until the handoff. Joining a split places a hold on your half — the money is reserved on your card, not taken. At the meetup you pay your split partner directly with a digital payment app (Venmo or Zelle — never cash), they confirm they got it, and the hold is released back to you. The only real charge is the $1 Halfsies fee on a completed split, and your first split is free. If the buyer doesn’t show, your hold is released and you’re never out of pocket.
